Cashback bonuses

Cashback returns part of what you lose over a set period, as cash or as bonus money. It does not change the odds of any game and it does not turn losses into wins. What it does is soften a losing week, and how much it softens it depends on the percentage, the cap, the period and whether the cashback itself has to be wagered.

This page explains how cashback is calculated, with worked examples in Canadian dollars. Each casino's current cashback offer, if it has one, is on that casino's page, taken from the casino's partner data. SpinsPilot Canada covers players outside Ontario and Alberta, 19+ (18+ in Quebec and Manitoba).

What cashback is

A cashback offer returns a percentage of your net losses over a period. The common forms are:

  • Welcome cashback. For new players, on losses during the first days or weeks after registration.
  • Weekly or daily cashback. A repeating offer on the previous period's losses.
  • Game-specific cashback. Limited to one part of the casino, such as live casino.
  • Loyalty cashback. A percentage that rises with your level in a VIP or loyalty program.
  • Cashback on wagers. Some casinos, especially crypto casinos, return a small share of everything you bet, win or lose, sometimes called rakeback. It is calculated on turnover, not on losses.

How net losses are calculated

This is the part that varies most, so find it in the terms before anything else. Casinos use one of two methods:

  • Bets minus wins on the eligible games during the period.
  • Deposits minus withdrawals and remaining balance over the period.

Either way, the terms often leave out bets placed with bonus money, losses on excluded games and periods in which you used another bonus. A pending withdrawal may count as money you still have.

How it works in dollars

The examples below use made-up figures to show the arithmetic. They are not any casino's offer.

Worked example 1: a losing week

As a worked example only: 10% weekly cashback, and you finish the week $150 down on eligible games. You receive 10% of $150 = $15. Paid as cash, it is yours to withdraw. Paid as bonus money with a 5x requirement, you must bet $15 x 5 = $75 before it can be withdrawn.

Worked example 2: the cap

As a worked example only: 20% cashback up to $100, and you lose $800. Twenty percent is $160, but the cap holds the payment at $100. Above $500 of losses in this example, every extra dollar lost earns nothing back.

Worked example 3: a winning week

If you finish the period ahead, there is no net loss and no cashback. Cashback only pays when you have lost.

Worked example 4: cashback on wagers

As a worked example only: 0.5% back on every bet, and you place $2,000 in bets. You receive $10 whatever the result. On a slot with a 96% return to player, $2,000 in bets costs about $80 on average, so the return covers a small part of that cost, not all of it.

The terms that decide its value

  • Percentage and cap. A higher percentage with a low cap can pay less than a lower percentage with no cap.
  • Cash or bonus money. Cash cashback can be withdrawn at once. Bonus cashback carries a wagering requirement, and our wagering requirements guide explains how that changes its value.
  • Period. Daily, weekly, monthly, or a fixed window after registration.
  • Minimum loss. Some offers pay only once net losses reach a set amount.
  • Eligible games. Losses on excluded games do not count.
  • Claiming and expiry. Some cashback is credited automatically; some has to be claimed within a short window, and unclaimed cashback is lost.
  • Other bonuses. Playing with another active bonus can remove that period from the calculation.
  • Eligible payment methods. Deposits made with excluded methods may not count toward losses.

Cashback or a deposit bonus?

A deposit bonus gives you more to play with at the start, with wagering attached. Cashback gives back part of what you have already lost, often with lighter terms. If you would play anyway and want simple terms, cash cashback without wagering is the easier offer to understand. If an offer pays cashback as bonus money at a high multiple, compare it with the welcome bonus on the same casino's page: our welcome bonus guide shows how.

Identity checks before your first withdrawal

Before a casino pays out anything won with a bonus, it checks who you are. This is known as KYC (know your customer), and it is usually triggered by your first withdrawal request. What casinos commonly ask for:

  • Photo ID: a driver's licence, passport or provincial photo ID card, with all four corners visible.
  • Proof of address: a recent utility bill, bank statement or government letter showing the same name and address as your casino account.
  • Proof of payment method: for example a screenshot of your online banking showing your name, the account you sent an Interac e-Transfer from, or a card photo with the middle digits covered.

Bonuses are limited to one per person, and the terms usually extend that to one per household, address, device or IP address. Opening a second account to claim an offer again is a common reason casinos confiscate bonus winnings. Upload your documents soon after you register, so a payout is not held while they are checked.

Province exclusions in the offer terms

The casinos on SpinsPilot Canada are for players outside Ontario and Alberta. Beyond that, two sets of terms decide whether you can use an offer. The casino's general terms list the countries and provinces it does not accept at all. The bonus terms can add their own list, so an offer may be closed to players in a province where the casino otherwise takes players. Read the restricted territories clause in both before you deposit. If you are not sure whether your province is covered, ask the casino's support in writing and keep the reply.

Canadian details that change the numbers

  • Currency. Choose Canadian dollars at registration if the casino offers it. If your account is in euros or US dollars, the bonus, the wagering and any caps are counted in that currency, and your bank converts every deposit and withdrawal.
  • Interac e-Transfer. It is the deposit method Canadian casinos support most. Before you deposit, check that the bonus terms do not exclude it, and check that the casino pays withdrawals by e-Transfer too. Our Interac e-Transfer guide explains deposits, withdrawals and fees.
  • Credit cards. Big banks that mention casino charges in their cardholder agreements treat them as a cash advance, with a fee and interest from the first day. See the Canadian banks guide.
  • Old payment lists. Interac Online was retired in 2024 and InstaDebit closed in 2026. Terms or reviews that still list either of them are out of date.

Red flags

  • Losses defined in a way that leaves most of your play out, such as excluding every game you actually play.
  • Cashback paid as bonus money with a high wagering multiple.
  • A claim window of a few hours, after which the cashback is lost.
  • A cap so low that the percentage barely matters.
  • "Cashback" that is credited only if you deposit again.

Responsible gambling

Cashback can make losses feel smaller than they are, and it should never be a reason to keep playing to "earn" more of it back. It returns part of a loss; the rest is still lost. Set a deposit limit in your casino account before you claim anything, decide in advance how much you are prepared to lose, and stop when you reach it, whatever the wagering counter says. Online gambling is for adults only: 19+ in most provinces, 18+ in Quebec and Manitoba. If gambling stops being fun, our responsible gambling page lists free, confidential help for every province we cover, and our self-exclusion guide explains how to take a break.

Where to find the current offers

This page explains how cashback offers work. It does not list them, because offers change often and the terms decide what an offer is worth. Every casino on our Canadian list has its own page on SpinsPilot, with the offer and terms as the casino supplies them in its partner data. The full list is on all casinos. If a casino's page shows no such offer, we have no confirmed one for it. To see every current offer in one place, go to all bonuses.

Read the full terms on the casino's own site before you deposit: the casino can change or end an offer at any time, and its terms are the ones that apply. SpinsPilot may earn a commission when you sign up through our links, which never changes how we rate a casino. See our affiliate disclosure and how we rate casinos.
