Beginner's guide to online casinos in Canada

New to online casinos? This guide takes you from choosing a casino to your first withdrawal, in the order you will meet each step: what to check before you sign up, how the Canadian cashier works with Interac e-Transfer, which documents a casino asks Canadians for, how to read a bonus, and which limits to set before your first deposit.

SpinsPilot Canada is for players outside Ontario and Alberta. Online gambling is for adults only: 19+ in most provinces and the territories, 18+ in Quebec and Manitoba. The casinos we list are for entertainment, not a way to make money.

Before your first bet: gambling is entertainment you pay for

Treat what you deposit as the price of an evening out, like a concert ticket or a meal, not as an investment. Every casino game keeps a share of what is bet over time, so the expected result of playing is a loss. A win is a pleasant extra, not a result you can plan for, and no strategy changes that over the long run.

A few ground rules make the rest of this guide easier:

  • Set a budget first. Decide how much you can afford to lose in a month without touching rent, food or savings. When it is gone, you stop until next month.
  • Never chase losses. Raising your bets to win back what you lost is how a small loss becomes a large one.
  • Play with a clear head. Not after drinking, not when you are upset or tired, and not to fix a money problem.
  • Keep it to your own money. Never borrow, and never use a credit card to fund play you cannot pay off the same month.

Where SpinsPilot Canada fits

Ontario has its own regulated online market, and Alberta has its own provincial site, PlayAlberta. SpinsPilot Canada does not cover those two provinces, and many of the casinos we list refuse their residents in their terms.

In the other provinces and the territories, the provincial lottery corporation runs the only provincially authorized gambling site: PlayNow in British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, lotoquebec.com in Quebec, and Atlantic Lottery in the Atlantic provinces. The casinos on our list are offshore casinos licensed by regulators outside the provincial system, such as Curaçao, Anjouan, Kahnawake or Tobique. That difference matters: no provincial regulator supervises them, so the checks below are on you, and our reviews do the research for you.

How to choose a casino

These are the same checks we use for every casino we rate, in order of how much they matter.

  1. A licence you can verify. Find the regulator and licence number in the footer, then look it up in the regulator's own register and check that the site's exact domain is on it. Our casino licences guide shows how, regulator by regulator.
  2. Your province is accepted. Read the restricted countries or territories section of the terms. Some casinos refuse provinces beyond Ontario and Alberta, and an account opened from a refused province can be closed with the winnings held.
  3. Interac e-Transfer on the casino's own site. Check the payments page or the cashier, not only a review, and check the withdrawal side as well as deposits.
  4. A Canadian dollar account. Playing in CAD avoids a currency conversion on every deposit and every withdrawal.
  5. Safer-play tools. Deposit limits, time-outs, self-exclusion and reality checks, available in your account without asking.
  6. Support you can reach. Live chat in English, ideally around the clock, and an email address for anything you want in writing.
  7. Its record with players. A pattern of complaints about withdrawals is a reason to walk away.

Also check that the connection is secure: the address starts with https and your browser shows the padlock. Then check that you are on the domain you meant to visit, since some casinos are copied by look-alike sites. How we rate casinos explains how each check scores, and our casino reviews and all casinos list show what we found for each brand.

Creating your account

Sign up with your real details: your legal name as it appears on your ID, your date of birth, and your home address. A name or address that does not match your documents is a common reason a first withdrawal is held. Use an email address and phone number you check, because the casino will send verification codes and payout notices there.

Turn on two-step verification if the casino offers it, and never share your login. Before you deposit, set your limits; there is a section on that below.

The Canadian cashier: Interac e-Transfer

Interac e-Transfer is the deposit method Canadian casinos support most. The money moves from your own chequing or savings account, you never type a card number into the casino, and you approve each payment in your own online banking.

  1. Open the cashier and choose Interac e-Transfer. Enter the amount in Canadian dollars.
  2. Give the email address or mobile number linked to your online banking, if the cashier asks for it.
  3. Approve the payment in your bank, either by accepting a money request or by sending an e-Transfer with the reference the cashier shows. Copy the reference exactly.
  4. Wait for the balance to update, usually within minutes. Your bank's fraud checks can add time, especially for a first payment to a new recipient.

Pay from an account in your own name. A transfer from someone else's account can be returned or can block your first withdrawal. Interac Online was retired in 2024 and InstaDebit has closed, so if a cashier or a review still lists either one, treat that list as out of date. Our Interac e-Transfer guide covers Autodeposit, fees and delays in full, and our Canadian banks guide lists each bank's e-Transfer limits and its rules on cards.

If you use a credit card instead, expect most banks to treat a casino deposit as a cash advance, with a fee and interest from the day you deposit.

Verification (KYC): what Canadians are asked for

Before your first withdrawal, and sometimes earlier, the casino will ask you to prove who you are. This is known as KYC, short for know your customer, and it is part of the anti-fraud and anti-money laundering checks the casino's licence requires. Send the documents early, ideally before you play, so a payout is not held while they are checked.

  • Photo ID: a driver's licence, a passport or a provincial photo ID card. Most casinos ask for the front and back of a card, in colour, with all four corners visible.
  • Proof of address: a utility bill, a bank statement or a government letter, usually dated within the last three months, showing the same name and address as your account.
  • Proof of the payment method: for Interac e-Transfer or a bank transfer, a void cheque or a bank statement that shows your name and account. For a card, a photo of the card with the middle digits covered.
  • Sometimes a selfie holding your ID, or a short video check.

Never send your Social Insurance Number. A casino does not need your SIN to verify you, and no legitimate verification asks for it. If a site asks for your SIN, your online banking password or a full card number, stop and do not send it. You can cover the account number on a void cheque except for the last few digits, if the casino accepts that.

Upload documents only through the casino's own account page or its support channel on the casino's domain, never by replying to an unexpected email.

Reading a bonus

A bonus can stretch your playing time, but every bonus comes with terms, and the terms decide whether it is worth taking. The common types:

  • Welcome bonus: the casino matches part of your first deposit, sometimes with free spins. See our welcome bonus page.
  • No deposit bonus: a small amount or a few spins just for signing up, usually with a cap on what you can withdraw. See our no deposit bonus page.
  • Cashback: a share of your losses returned over a period. See our cashback bonus page.
  • No wagering bonus: winnings can be withdrawn without a playthrough requirement, usually in exchange for a smaller bonus. See our no wagering bonus page.

The term that matters most is the wagering requirement: how much you have to bet before bonus winnings can be withdrawn. As a worked example only, a $10 bonus at 30x the bonus needs $300 in bets. If the same 30x applies to the deposit plus the bonus on a $10 deposit, it needs $600. Then check the maximum bet, the games that count, the expiry and any maximum cashout. Our wagering requirements guide works through each one in dollars, including what a 200x offer really asks of you.

You can usually decline a bonus. Without one, your deposit and winnings are yours to withdraw at any time, subject only to verification. Each casino's current offer is on its /go/ page and on our all bonuses page.

Set your limits before your first deposit

Most casinos let you set limits in your account settings, and a casino that does not is one to skip. Set them on the day you sign up, while you are deciding calmly:

  • Deposit limit: the most you can deposit per day, week or month. This is the limit to set first. Your bank's e-Transfer limit is a ceiling, not a budget.
  • Loss limit: the most you can lose over a period.
  • Session or time limit and reality checks: a reminder, or a stop, after a set time.
  • Time-out: a short break, from a day to a few weeks.
  • Self-exclusion: a long, firm break. Our self-exclusion guide covers the provincial programs, casino-level exclusion and blocking software.

At most casinos, lowering a limit takes effect at once, while raising or removing one comes with a waiting period. That delay is deliberate.

Your first games

Start with simple games, small bets and demo mode where it is offered.

Slots

You choose a bet and spin; wins come from matching symbols on paylines or across the reels. Each slot shows a payout percentage, or RTP (return to player), such as 96%. That is the share of all bets the game is designed to pay back over a very long run, not what one session returns. A higher RTP means the game keeps a little less on average, and volatility decides how uneven the wins are.

Roulette

You bet on where the ball lands. Even-money bets such as red or black are the simplest. Choose European roulette, with a single zero, over American roulette, which adds a double zero and nearly doubles the house edge.

Blackjack

You try to get closer to 21 than the dealer without going over. Your decisions matter, and basic strategy, a chart of the right move for each hand, keeps the house edge low. Skip the insurance bet.

The casino glossary explains the terms you will meet in game rules and bonus terms.

Your first withdrawal

  1. Finish verification if the casino has asked for documents.
  2. Finish or cancel any bonus. A withdrawal while a bonus is active can cancel the bonus and the winnings tied to it.
  3. Request the withdrawal in the cashier. Many casinos pay out to a method you have already deposited with.
  4. Wait for the casino's review. Each operator sets its own pending period in its terms, and this review is usually the longest part of the wait.
  5. Receive the money. An Interac e-Transfer payout usually arrives within minutes once sent. With Autodeposit set up in your banking, it goes straight into your account.

Payout times are set by each casino, not by us; check the terms before you deposit. In Canada, recreational gambling winnings are generally not taxed. Our winnings and tax guide explains the exceptions, with links to the CRA.

Betting on sports too

Many casinos on our list also have a sportsbook. Odds can be shown in American format, such as -150, or in decimal, such as 1.67, and most sportsbooks let you switch between them. Start with our odds formats guide, then the puck line for hockey and parlays. Our sports betting section covers the rest.

If it stops being fun

Warning signs include playing longer than you meant to, hiding it, borrowing, or betting to win back losses. If any of that sounds familiar, take a break and talk to someone at a free, confidential help line. Our responsible gambling page lists the help line for every province and territory we cover.
