Live dealer casinos in Canada: how live games work

A live dealer game is a real table game, with a real dealer, real cards or a real wheel, streamed to your screen as it happens. You bet through buttons on the stream, and the result is read by cameras and sensors and settled in your account within seconds. This guide explains how live studios work, what live tables and game shows offer, how table limits and pace affect what you spend, why live games usually count for little or nothing toward a bonus, and what to know about connection problems and fairness.

Every dollar figure on this page is a worked example only, not the terms or settings of any real casino. Online gambling is for adults only: 19+ in most provinces, 18+ in Quebec and Manitoba.

How a live studio works

Live games are not made by the casino you play at. They are made by specialist game providers, such as Evolution, Pragmatic Play and Playtech, which run studios with dozens or hundreds of tables and stream them to many casinos at once. Some tables are shared by every casino that carries them; others are dedicated tables run for one casino or one language. Some providers also stream tables from land-based casino floors.

What you see is the front of a production line:

  • Cameras film each table from several angles, and the stream adjusts its quality to your connection.
  • A game control unit at each table links the physical game to the software, and optical recognition reads each card as it is dealt or the pocket where the ball lands, turning it into the data that settles your bet.
  • Sensors in roulette wheels and card shoes confirm results and flag faults.
  • Dealers and hosts work in shifts and follow fixed procedures; the chat is moderated.

The provider runs the game, and the casino runs your account, your balance and your withdrawals. Both need licences, which is why the casino's licence still matters when the game itself comes from a large provider. Our guide to casino licences explains how to check one.

Live table games

  • Blackjack. Seven-seat tables, bet behind, and unlimited-player tables where everyone shares one hand and makes their own decisions. Rules such as the blackjack payout and soft 17 vary by table. See our blackjack guide.
  • Roulette. European, French and American wheels, speed and auto tables, and multiplier versions. See our roulette guide.
  • Baccarat. Classic, No Commission, speed and squeeze tables. See our baccarat guide.
  • Poker against the dealer. Games such as Casino Hold'em and Three Card Poker, where you play your hand against the dealer's, not against other players.
  • Dice and other games. Sic Bo, Dragon Tiger and similar quick games, each with its own pay table.

Some providers run tables in French and other languages, which players in Quebec may prefer. The table name in the lobby usually shows the language.

Game shows

Game shows are a newer kind of live game: a host, a studio set and a game built around a large wheel or board rather than a casino table. Dream Catcher, a money wheel launched in 2017, started the category, and titles such as Crazy Time, Monopoly Live and Funky Time followed. You bet on which segment the wheel will stop on; some segments pay a fixed multiple of the stake and others start a bonus round. Many shows also add random multipliers to segments before each spin. A bonus round may be a second wheel, a board game played out on screen, or a pick-and-reveal round, and its prizes are set by the game's rules, not by the host.

Three things are worth knowing before you play one.

  • Each bet has its own return. On a wheel show, the return differs from segment to segment, and the help panel lists it per bet. Many game show bets return less than an even-money bet at a European roulette table, which returns 97.30%.
  • The wheel decides, not the host. The chance of each segment is fixed by how many times it appears on the wheel. Bonus rounds, animations and the host's commentary are presentation on top of that.
  • A near miss is a miss. A wheel that stops one segment short of a bonus has not "nearly" paid. The segment it stopped on is the result, and the next spin has no memory of it.

Shows are built to be watched, with chat, hosts and long bonus sequences. That is part of the entertainment, and it is also a reason to set a time limit before you start.

Table limits

Every live table has a minimum and a maximum bet, shown in the lobby and in the table information. Limits are often set per bet type: a roulette table may have one range for a single number and a wider one for red or black, and side bets in blackjack and baccarat have their own. Higher-limit and VIP tables raise the minimum.

Three reasons to check them before you sit down:

  1. Budget. The minimum sets the cost of every round. As a worked example only, a $5 minimum with a $100 session budget gives you 20 minimum bets, and a $25 minimum gives you four.
  2. Systems. The maximum is what stops doubling systems: once the next stake would pass it, the series ends with the full loss.
  3. Bonus rules. If a bonus is active, its maximum bet applies even where the table allows more.

Pace and what an hour costs

Live games play fewer rounds an hour than digital versions, because a dealer has to deal, spin and settle. At the same stake and the same house edge, fewer rounds means a lower cost per hour. As a worked example only: 50 rounds of $10 on red at a European roulette table is $500 wagered, which costs about $13.50 on average. Speed tables, which shorten betting windows and dealing, raise the number of rounds and the cost per hour with them.

How live games count toward wagering

Most casinos count live dealer games toward a wagering requirement at a low rate, often 10% or less, and many count them at 0% or forbid them while a bonus is active. Placing live bets with an active bonus can break the bonus terms and cost the bonus and its winnings. As a worked example only, a $3,500 requirement at 10% weighting means $35,000 in live bets; at 0%, no amount of live play clears it.

Some casinos run separate promotions for live games, such as live cashback, with their own terms. The current offer for each casino on our list is on its /go/ page. If you mainly play live games, declining the welcome bonus is often the simpler route, because your balance then stays free to withdraw. The arithmetic is in our guide to wagering requirements.

Connection basics

A live game needs a stable connection more than a fast one. A few points:

  • Bets count only once accepted. A bet sent as the timer closes may be rejected; the screen confirms accepted bets.
  • If you disconnect, the round goes on. Bets already accepted are settled on the result. In blackjack, a decision you did not make is usually taken by the default in the game rules, often to stand. The help panel has a section on disconnections and malfunctions.
  • Check the history. Every round has a round or game ID in your bet history. If a result looks wrong, give that ID to the casino's support.
  • Watch your data. A video stream uses far more data than a digital game, which matters on a capped mobile plan.

Fairness basics

A live game uses physical equipment: a real wheel, real cards shuffled by hand or by a shuffling machine, a real shoe. The odds are those of the physical game, the same as at a land-based table with the same rules. Providers are licensed and audited by gaming regulators, and the digital parts of a live game, such as random multipliers, come from a random number generator tested like any other. Rounds are recorded, which is how disputes are checked.

The weak point for a player is rarely the table; it is the casino's handling of the account and the withdrawal. Check the licence, the terms and the complaint record before you deposit. Our casino reviews cover all three, and every casino on our Canadian list has a review.

Currency, mobile and privacy

Currency. Live bets are taken in your account's currency, and the table limits are shown in it. If a casino offers an account in Canadian dollars, your stakes, wins and limits are all in dollars. If it does not, every deposit and withdrawal is converted, and the conversion has a cost. Our reviews state which casinos offer a CAD account.

Mobile. Live games run in a phone browser or app, usually with the video at the top and a reduced betting panel below. Roulette and game shows fit a portrait screen well; a full roulette layout or a seven-seat blackjack table is easier to read in landscape. Confirm each bet on screen before the timer closes, because small buttons are easy to miss.

Privacy. The dealer cannot see you. Your screen name may appear in the chat or next to your seat, so choose one that does not identify you, and never share account or payment details in a game chat.

Before you join a table

  1. Read the table rules: decks, payouts and side bets.
  2. Check the limits: a minimum that fits your session budget.
  3. Check the return: for game shows, per bet in the help panel.
  4. Check your bonus status: live bets may not count, or may break the terms.
  5. Set a time limit: live games, and game shows above all, are easy to keep watching.

Terms such as bet behind, RTP and house edge are defined in the casino glossary.
